Balrampur’s Traditional Products Gain International Exposure at UP International Trade Show

ODOP Initiative Promotes Local Enterprises, Traditional Sweets and Munj Handicrafts

Balrampur: Traditional products, indigenous delicacies and handicrafts from Balrampur received a wider market platform at the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show held at India Expo Mart in Greater Noida from September 25 to 29. The district’s distinctive culinary heritage and traditional craftsmanship attracted attention from visitors, business representatives and potential buyers from India and abroad.

The initiative, supported by the state government’s One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, aims to connect local entrepreneurs, traditional sweet makers and artisans with organised markets and expand their commercial opportunities.

Balrampur’s popular kalakand and coconut barfi received appreciation for their taste, quality and traditional preparation methods. The district’s well-known Balaji ki Chaat and handicrafts made from locally available munj grass also drew interest from visitors and prospective buyers.

Focus on Market Access and Enterprise Growth

The district administration is working to connect small producers with modern supply chains, wholesale buyers and institutional markets. The initiative seeks to improve value addition, increase incomes and create employment and self-employment opportunities for local youth and artisans.

Balrampur, located in the Terai region, has considerable potential in dairy production, agriculture and natural forest resources. The administration aims to translate these resources and traditional skills into commercially viable enterprises.

The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Department is providing technical guidance to improve the shelf life, hygiene and quality of traditional food products. Emphasis is being placed on compliance with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) requirements, alongside improvements in packaging, branding and marketing.

Local sweet makers and food entrepreneurs are also being trained in modern packaging techniques to help their products reach organised retail outlets in major cities.

Training, Finance and Digital Commerce

Under the ODOP Skill Development and Toolkit Distribution Scheme, training programmes are being conducted to upgrade the skills of traditional artisans and confectioners. The distribution of modern equipment and improved toolkits is intended to enhance production capacity, product quality and hygiene standards.

Women’s self-help groups are also being linked with traditional enterprises, enabling rural women to participate in primary processing, packaging and marketing activities.

To address financial constraints, the state government is facilitating access to institutional credit and margin money subsidies. Bank linkages are being strengthened through programmes such as the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, the Chief Minister’s Youth Self-Employment Scheme and the MUDRA scheme.

The administration is also promoting digital commerce to reduce dependence on intermediaries and improve returns for producers. Registered entrepreneurs and artisans are being encouraged to register on national platforms such as the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

Plans for Common Facilities and GI Recognition

A Common Facility Centre is also under consideration to provide small artisans with affordable access to quality testing, cold-chain facilities, advanced packaging and machinery under one roof.

Efforts are being pursued to obtain Geographical Indication (GI) recognition for Balrampur’s distinctive products, which could help establish their authenticity, strengthen their market identity and improve their value in domestic and international markets.

The district administration is also developing a monitoring mechanism to ensure timely fulfilment of business enquiries and purchase orders generated at the trade show. The proposed system aims to support small enterprises with logistics, quality control and smoother commercial operations.

Plans include providing permanent sales and display spaces for Balrampur products in Unity Malls being developed in major cities of Uttar Pradesh, offering local producers access to urban consumers and tourists throughout the year.

Cluster-based arrangements are also being encouraged to ensure a consistent supply of raw materials, particularly for dairy-based products, while preserving their traditional character and quality.

The initiative reflects the broader Local to Global approach, combining traditional skills, local resources and government support to strengthen rural enterprises, generate livelihood opportunities and expand the market reach of Balrampur’s distinctive products.
